How Do I Know?

I feel like I can relate well to students who struggle because I have gone through this myself. I could read a whole passage, but my mind was completely elsewhere, and then I could barely tell you what it was about. It took me until HIGH SCHOOL to understand that the slower I read, the harder it is to comprehend, because it allows my mind to wander.

I’ve had to work twice as hard on my verbal and reading comprehension skills, which means spending double the amount of time. However, the sense of pride gained at my progression is twice as sweet!

One device I used to really help improve my verbal skills and scores and standardized tests is WORD SMART, developed by the late Alex Trebek. It incorporates fun ways to learn vocabulary and combines techniques that will make students feel like they are even playing a video game!
Although I have never been diagnosed with dyslexia, I have taken a very big interest in studying it, and became Orton Gillingham certified in 2023. I have already found this approach to be quite effective.
I often felt like I was falling behind. On the bright side, we don’t have anyone to compare to. There is no curriculum to follow. Learning can be very fun!
